Besides one’s self, family is the most important aspect of an individual’s life. No matter what you do with your life, to yourself, or to others, your family will support you in any way they can. It is rare to find an entire family living in the same city, yet alone the same state. Families get together for individual birthday’s, family reunions, and holidays throughout the year. One specific holiday that some people may take for granted is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a time for family to gather around and be thankful that they have each other, especially having each other’s holiday recipes.
On a personal note, I didn’t realize how important Thanksgiving was to me until I went away to college. Being in College for the previous three years, I have not been able to travel home for Thanksgiving due to many reasons. Furthermore, the past three Thanksgivings haven’t felt truly right. Yes I did have a standard turkey dinner with mashed potatoes and stuffing, but I was missing the most important part of Thanksgiving; family. Without family, Thanksgiving Day is just like any other ordinary day of the year. Family is the whole reason Thanksgiving still exists, not due to the fact that stuffing your stomach full of tasty food is amazing. According to a Pew Research Center survey in 2010, 89% of those surveyed planned to have a Thanksgiving meal with family. The typical host planned to set places for a dozen relatives; 62% said 10 or more would be present for the holiday meal.
I took the above photo as a reminder to what Thanksgiving means. Above is a young woman sitting alone at a table with a turkey in the center, pondering off into the distance. Notice that there still is place settings set for people that are not there. In this picture, you see just an ordinary dinner table. If those place settings were occupied, the whole meaning behind the picture would be different, a true Thanksgiving has been fulfilled.
