Eliminating Blur on Fast Moving Subjects

At the beginning level of photography, it is very frustrating to realize your photo is blurred after you've lined up the perfect shot and pressed the shutter at the right moment. This will be the moment when photographers will question their camera setup and seek help from other photographers to help prevent this in the future. An article from Digital Photo Secrets mentions that there is no need for this frustration and with an understanding of the environmental factors that come into play, you can anticipate the steps you need to take to capture the moment.

Ambient Light is the most important factor in any action. In order to capture an action shot, a very high shutter speed is required, but there is a catch. With an increase in shutter speed, you decrease the amount of light reaching the image sensor on your camera. To combat this, you can increase your aperture size, use a flash, or increase your ISO.

The aperture of the lens is the hole that allows light to travel through before reaching the sensor. With a lower f-stop, you will allow more light to be let in and with more light available, you will be able to use a faster shutter speed. Unfortunately, whenever you open your aperture, you reduce the depth of field in your photograph.

Using a flash is a good option, as it will allow an excellent combination of aperture and shutter speed. But a flash has the potential to blow out your subject and provide artificial light, which is not in favor.

Another way to help eliminate blur on fast moving subjects is to change your ISO setting, or how sensitive your camera is to light. If you increase it, you will be able to increase your aperture and shutter speed without darkening or blurring your photos. Unfortunately, this makes your photos more grainy.
